ORCA Vritra VX - XRAY T3'12 takes glory at ROCS Round 3 (April 8, 2012)

ROCS Round 3 took place at Raceworks Hobbies Singapore on April 8, 2012. I usually participate in the Modified Class only, but in this round I joined both Raceworks Modified and ORCA Super Stock 17.5T, in order to test out and promote the new ORCA Vritra VX ESC. My teammate Michael Lo from Team ORCA Malaysia took the chance to visit us in this race too. However he had some car technical problems during the qualifying so had to retire from the race early. I was very happy to take TQ and winning both classes, showing very good lap times especially on 17.5T boost, a good start from the new released top of the range ORCA speedo! The race showed good potential of the new ORCA Vritra VX ESC providing smooth acceleration, great top end speed and a strong braking system, and achieving fastest laptimes of the track.

In the ORCA-supported ORCA Super Stock 17.5T class, 2 out of 3 qualifying would be counted for the finals. I started off slow in the first qualifying, unfortunately programmed the wrong speedo settings. I was off pace but luckily Leonard Sim and Michael Lo was having their own technical problem therefore I topped the first round. In the second qualifying, using the correct speedo settings, I was able to topped the round again just missing a 24 lapper by 7/10th sec. It was a good round which I had good pace at 15.2sec lap, the fastest lap of the day. Michael Lo was doing 15.3sec lap in the first round despite unfamiliar race conditions, had to retire again in the second qualifying due to broken drive belt. Even though I do not have to run the third qualifying round, I did a little more testing on the software, and also trying a different tire treatment using Acorn Tyre Essence and Nasa Mighty Gripper V2. But due to reduced traction from the hot weather at 37degC, i was not able to improve and still maintaining at 15.2sec lap. I won the third round as well and gave me the overall TQ. Leonard Sim took 2nd in the final round giving him 2nd from the pole, while Daryl Thong with his ORCA VTC MK2 XRAY T3'12 following closely in 3rd.

Finals was disrupted by heavy rain around 2pm. Soaking wet track delayed the finals until about 4pm. With half of the track still damped, the race director decided to run the finals. Track conditions was definitely at its worst with very low traction and even sliding at some corners. In Final A1, everyone started off slow, and in the first corner I already ran very wide, with Leonard overtaking the lead. I had to struggle very hard in these wet conditions as I think the turbo boost settings was just a bit too much in the wet. I dropped down in the pack but able to recover up and fighting for the lead. Pressuring Leonard Sim in every corner for almost until the end, I was lucky to be able to pass him at the end of the straight taking the inside line at the hairpin sliding in the wet, and won Final A1 3sec ahead. Daryl Thong made a mistake in the last lap dropped him to 3rd after overtaking Leonard Sim, just 1/100th second apart. In the Final A2, track was much drier, Leonard Sim was pressuring me right from the start. I was maintaining my pace and keeping calm for the longest time, before Leonard Sim made a mistake giving me some breather and cruising in to win Final A2. Already won the class, I sat up for the Final A3 to concentrate on the Modified class. Leonard Sim won Final A3, while Daryl Thong, after sliding off from the start, finished 2nd after being held back by Allister Lim who was in 2nd position. So overall position when to myself, Leonard Sim and Daryl Thong.

In the Racework Modified Class, I used the same car and same ESC with different speedo settings. Timing had to be well-organized as i had only 5-10 minutes to switch motor, tires, batteries and speedo settings. Good thing that the ORCA program card comes with saved parameters so it is just couple of buttons to switch setting. The Huge RC 36R tires has good grip so I had not much problem with traction. In this class, we were running the Reedy format taking points from 4 out of 6 runs. I had the same car and settings from the 17.5T boost which I think my XRAY T3'12 was at its best settings so far that is very suitable to my driving, especially with the XRAY extra flex lower and upper deck. I took the first two round easily posting 15.173 sec lap, although I think some speedo setting changes especially on the drag brake and brake frequency should make faster laptimes. The ORCA Vritra VX ESC has improved braking system allowing fine tuning on the braking which is very important in RC racing nowadays. Third round was disrupted by rain. Due to the delay, this class was reduced to 5 rounds taking points from best 3 rounds. When the race resumed, I was again struggling in the wet conditions as the too powerful boost in the speedo gave me a lot of sliding and unable to put the power onto the ground. EC Wee which had a better car won the third and fourth round. Down to the last round, it was between myself and EC Wee to win the class. Due to time constraint and not having luck with the modified motors in the damped track conditions, I decided to run the 17.5T boost in the last round. I was able to take the lead and hold off the rest with more consistent laptimes, therefore taking the overall win, with ORCA-XRAY 1-2 finish.
